o14.
Mello stared long and hard at Near his slight frown slowly deepening as the time stretched and he tried his damndest not to allow himself to reply... but eventually, as always eventually, he gave-in and heaved a great big tortured sigh, planting his boot against the console and shoving it hard enough that his office chair rolled over towards Near's, the back of his chair bumping lightly against the back of Near's and leaving him motionless again.

"If you wanna' play with me instead of sitting and playing with dice all by your lonesome, all you need to do is stop insulting me and keep your weird, weird comments in-check. Alright?"

Of course put this on Near's head. 'Cause it was more Near's fault than his own that they'd gotten into a verbal tiff before, right?

Near blinked up at him.

"My weird comments? To which comments are you referring? I might be able to do that more easily if I knew what you were talking about," he grumbled.

Honestly, Mello could really be very frustrating sometimes.

"You know which ones." he frowned grumpily, shaking his head and sighing as if Near was just being ornery for no reason at all, tapping his currently-bare fingertips against his bicep in vague annoyance.

"Needless to say, I'll abstain from making any of those kinds of comments as well." He turned his head slightly, looking over his shoulder and Near's as well, frowning just a bit when his hair brushed over Near's shoulder- he hadn't had a haircut in a while and was badly overdue, he thought. "So long as you're my sole form of entertainment, I have to make sure that you and I aren't stuck giving one-another the silent treatment. It's a pain in the ass, but it makes sense."

Near sighed. Well, if Mello was being gracious, he supposed he could make the effort, too.

"Fine," he huffed, jumping a little when Mello's hair brushed his shirt. It was odd, being this close to him, especially given their recent exchanges. He glanced up at him, giving him a slightly wry smile.

"...What topics are allowed, then?" he inquired.

Mello leaned away just slightly when Near turned his head and looked him in the eyes at this proximity. Just a little, but more than enough to be noted.

"So long as it's not sexual in any way what so ever, I think that it's permissible."

Well, that was... not disappointing in any way, obviously. Despite that, Near couldn't help poking. Just a little.

"But Mello," he asked, meeting his gaze. "That would spoil all the fun."

And that, Near thought, is what it looked like when he was flirting.

Near spoke and looked at him when he said that in such a way that he had the vague, sinking feeling that Near was honestly and truly flirting with him. And he swallowed a little, nagging lump in his throat and just glared at him for it, looking absolutely miserably grumpy.

"Maybe for you."

"Fine," he sighed, and debated adding a comment that Mello wasn't much fun for someone who dressed the way he did, but concluded that would be going too far.

"Why don't you pick a topic, then?"

Mello huffed and looked away from Near, staring at nothing in particular as he thought that over. Nothing immediately leapt to mind... except a bunch of off-limits sexual stuff, which he didn't exactly appreciate his brain volunteering.

"...It's hard to come up with topics off the top of my head. These things are supposed to just pop-up while you're speaking naturally with somebody."

He looked down at his fingers, frowning at the chipped black paint and raising his hand up to give it a proper once-over. Near felt much, much too close against his back... but that was weirdly comfortable, and he sure as hell was NOT going to say that out loud even if it presented an interesting change of topic.

"But you're the one with all the experience," Near reminded him innocently, the double entendre almost unintentional. "And you're the one restricting topics. So really, it should be up to you..."

He peered at Mello's hand.

"...You really ought to take that stuff off if you're not going to keep it tidy."

"Hm?" Mello's brow raised slightly and he turned his head back towards Near again, shifting his fingers lightly when he noted Near's eyes on his fingers. There- he'd ignore sexual connotations connected to that last statement and plow straight on into taking this topic as far as it would go.

"I'll need either nail polish remover or some polish for that. Do you-" Mello frowned, hesitated... then decided to change the structure of that sentence so it wouldn't sound strange, changing the meaning entirely in fact. "I mean, we'll need to save that for after Kira does whatever it is he's going to do. Unless Hal has some polish on her."

"No, Mello," Near said, quite unable to keep the smirk off his lips. "I don't keep black nailpolish in the building. But Ms. Ridner may be able it give you some, if you ask her, although I've never seen her wear black, and I don't think dark pink is really... you."

Mello hadn't been about to say that. He'd been about to say something entirely different and strange and incriminating... but Near didn't know that. And he wouldn't say so, either.

"No, pink is definitely out of the question."

"And I don't have any polish remover." Hal quietly informed from her side of the room, a tint of amusement colouring her voice though she was turned away from the both of them. "I don't carry that sort of thing on me."

Mello turned his head towards Hal, gave her a look that she didn't even see, and then turned back towards his fingernails: every movement of his head making his overlong hair brush over the back of Near's head and neck strangely, though he was certainly not paying attention to that and just relaxing in his office chair easily.

"Alright... so you'll have to put-up with these unkempt fingernails of mine."

Near pondered this.

"I'll manage," he drawled finally, glancing over at him with a critical eye. "You could use a haircut as well, by the way." Which was, he realized, probably rude, but it wasn't as if Mello wasn't pretty rude himself. He shrugged. "Still, as you said, that sort of thing can wait for now. What would you prefer to do?"

Mello certainly gave Near a bit of a look for the bluntness of his remark, but didn't particularly mind it. It was true, after all... his hair had never gone so long without a good cut before, and he definitely needed it. So he nodded lightly and folded his arms over his chest before sitting up straight in his chair and rotating it, finally, so that he was facing Near- or, rather, looking over his shoulder.

"Play something other than dice-building. That's my vote."

Not having expected Near to make such a grumpy executive decision, Mello's face reflected obvious surprise at the choice... but he got to his feet anyway, placing his hands on his hips and waiting, obviously, for the short white-haired boy to take the lead.

"Do you race these ducks? Are they motorized or something like that?"

Near led him over to the storage closet under the stairs and started to root around for his bag of ducks.

"Well, I don't race them because I don't have a pool big enough, but they are motorized... I could try to rig up a second remote control for you, if you wanted."

[info]burnt_chocolate

Mello followed Near around behind the stairs to the storage closet, which was not surprisingly rather filled-up with toys: sacks full of legos that made his contribution seem absolutely insignificant, stretches of plastic roads for motorized play cars and trains, and there, messiest of all... a kiddy pool. Presumably for the duckies.

His lip quirked into a weird half-smile for a moment as he wondered if Near kept a bathing suit in here for playing in the pool, too, and he thought of how ridiculous it would be if Near had been making orders and talking to Kira while sitting in a kiddy pool.

And thank God that didn't seem sexy to him as he was thinking it over.

"I'd appreciate that. It's no fun switching-off who has the controller... that's just boring." And, because he couldn't resist wanting to know, since the image was so amusing, he added with a grin: "Do you swim in this thing sometimes?"

"I'm not quite that petite, Mello,. I could sit in it, but swimming would be an exaggeration." Near said, dragging the sack of ducks out. "Get the pool, please."

He dragged the sack over to the open space and began unstacking ducks.

"Besides. I can't exactly picture myself sitting in that thing splashing around with my ducks, can you?"

He elected not to tell Mello that was pretty much exactly what he did with his ducks in the bath. But it was different in the bath, after all-- it was private and the water was warm and he had a little submarine in there, too. It was definitely better not to tell Mello that. Some things were really better not shared, after all.

Mello snorted softly, still rather amused by the suggestion that he refused to abandon despite Near obviously disproving his theory.

"I wouldn't be surprised, if that's what you mean." Mello reached down for the kiddy pool, saying nothing of Near's order-turned-request before dragging it out into the surveillance room calmly and laying it out with plenty of floor space all around, looking around as he reached up to scratch at his nose lightly as if in thought. "...Do you have a hose somewhere? Filling the pool will probably take at least a little while."

"Well, if you want go sit in it, I won't stop you," Near said, lining up the ducks on the floor. "However, if you want to see me in it, I'm afraid you're out of luck."

He waved a hand in the direction of the kitchen. "There's a hose under the sink, but you don't have to get it now if you don't want, I'll have to find another remote control first."

Mello's smile instantly dropped-off into a frown and he shot a baleful look in Near's direction, as if deeply affronted by the fact that Near had so casually shattered what had been a perfectly clean and unassuming mental image and source of amusement for him.

He blushed, very vaguely, but was already off to get the hose, marching with purpose into the kitchenette and, after a moment, retrieving the indicated hose.

"It's better if we get this out of the way now." He said cooly as he walked back towards the kiddy pool and dropped the hose unceremoniously inside, turning and heading back into the kitchen to turn on the water.

Near had picked up on the look and the hint of blush as Mello stomped off. What had that been about? Was Near's semi-innocent comments actually getting to him? For someone who claimed to be difficult to embarrass, Mello certainly blushed easily enough... And he was, Near had to admit (much to his own annoyance)... interesting when he blushed. Attractive, sort of. Cute, almost. Not that Near was accustomed to thinking of people in those terms, of course, and that was what made it so disconcerting.

He had managed, just about, to school his features into a dispassionate mask by the time Mello returned, however, and that was something, at least.

"If you say so," he said with a shrug. He had intended to go fetch another remote, but if Mello was going to put the water on now, he'd have to sit here with it until the pool filled to make sure the water didn't end up everywhere.

"Tell me before you turn the tap on, okay?"

Mello made a vague, noncommittal affirmative sound to Near's request as he fitted the other end of the hose onto the sink faucet, concentrating on the task at hand... and then, when he was satisfied that the hose was fully affixed, he laid his hand on the dial.

"Here it comes!" He informed loud and clear before, after a suitable enough pause, turning the dial all the way over towards cold. He didn't foresee their hands or bodies going into this water any time soon, after all.

Near quickly poked the tip of the hose into the pool.

"I don't think I really need to sit here and watch the faucet the whole while." Mello informed casually as he walked back into the room and settled himself down next to Near, looking into the slowly filling kiddy pool. Yep... this would take a while. he could get up and return to the sink when they got closer to the full-mark.

Mello sighed and stretched his arms out over his head, arching his back and popping a couple of disagreeable vertebrae back into proper place before folding his arms over his chest again with a faint sigh, watching the water crawl slowly to the edges of the kiddy pool's bottom and then slowly, slowly up the sides.

"..." he looked over at Near, frowning slightly, expression calm. "So. We're racing these things, you think?"

Near winced at the sound of creaking bone and cartilage. That couldn't be at all comfortable, could it?

"If you think there's a point to racing anything bigger than a snail around a track that's less than four feet in diameter, you're insane. Howver," he said, brightening a little, "we could sort of play bumper... ducks. If you want."

Brows raised at that suggestion and, really, Mello was more than likely to accept if only because Near seemed to brighten while suggesting it. Interaction promised to go more smoothly if Near was pleased with what they were doing, after all, and he sure as hell had no more suggestions at the moment for ways to play with a bunch of motorized swimming duckies and a kiddy pool full of cold water.

"Sure, that sounds fine by me." Mello's back still hurt just a little... probably from laying motionless on his back on an unmade mattress all night. But he didn't raise any more complaint about it.

Mello was... taken aback, to be frank, and sat motionless and silent for a few beats as he processed that question: the tone, the delivery, the focus of Near's eyes and the concern--

He would have been a little offended if it wasn't for that, actually. Even half-dizzy on medication, he had been just sober enough to feel that there was no dignity in being taken care of and fussed over by another human being. There was something very different, however, between how he felt when matt took care of him and how he was feeling now that Near was giving his physical distress some real, serious attention. Mello breathed in deeply, then breathed out, as if collecting himself and deciding on what sort of response he wanted to give. Should he be honest...?

"...Well, they still sting and they've been itching every now and again... But to be honest my back just feels a little stiff right now, that's all." He frowned slightly, brows knitting at how odd it felt to... confess that sort of thing.

"Really." He just added that to clarify, just in case.

Near nodded, not wanting to push any further. He was concerned, but he didn't want Mello to feel pestered or under scrutiny.

"All right. I trust you have your own painkillers, but if you're running low, please let me know and I can replace them for you, I know you can't access your contacts as easily as normal while you're here."

He paused. "...I know you did sleep, was the bed all right?"

Near's concern was still sort of unnerving for Mello, and as he watched the water slowly fill the kiddy pool he thought that, maybe it was nice so long as it was from Near.

Weird thought.

"I'm fine so far as painkillers go. I make it a point not to use them too often anyway... I don't like the way that they cloud my brain." Mello reached down and dipped his fingers into the water, splashing it just a little with a few slight, lazy movements of his fingertips. His lip twitched slightly as he looked over at Near, cocking a brow at him.

"...It was fine. I didn't really make myself comfortable first because I hadn't really anticipated sleeping for more than an hour or two at best."

Near watched him carefully; he could see wheels turning, but he certainly wasn't going inquire what he was thinking. Something confusing, clearly, Mello seemed a little bemused.

He nodded at Mello's words, agreeing completely; he tried not to use them himself if he could help it. "Understandable," he agreed quietly. "Perhaps generic over-the-counter analgesics might provide some relief, though?"

Of course Mello hadn't intended to sleep so long. Near sighed mentally, this was obviously something that was going to require some adjustment on Mello's part.

"Maybe you'll actually lie down properly tonight, then," he sighed. "I'll have someone bring you up some linens, too, maybe that would encourage you to actually use the bed properly," he added, a hint of a wry smile curving the corners of his mouth upwards.

Mello huffed and frowned in Near's general direction, reaching over and messing-up his hair without even sparing a thought for whether or not he should make contact that way.

"I'll lie down 'properly' if I need to." He removed his hand from Near's hair, just a bit surprised at his soft it was when you went touching it without any gloves on. "I can run for a good long while on practically no sleep before I honestly need any again. That's my first full night since the explosion."

He didn't feel that it was a confession he should be worried about making- if anything, it just proved how tough he was, right? That sleep was just a luxury and he could do well enough without it. Still... "Linens might be nice to have for the next time I bother napping, though."

"I'm sure you could, Mello," Near sighed, by now almost accustomed to being touched in this manner, and didn't flinch at all. "But that doesn't mean you should. Especially if you're still trying to heal those injuries."

Near did realize, however, that Mello was making something of an effort by admitting he'd like the bed to actually be furnished.

"I'll ask someone to make it for you later, then," he said, giving him a tiny smile.

The pool was almost full now, so he dropped a duck in experimentally and watched it bob up and down for a few moments before turning back to Mello.

"...Can you turn off the water now, please?"

Mello was already on his feet before Near even finished making his request, heading off towards the kitchenette with an easy, over-the-shoulder wave in affirmative. He turned the dial and shut-off the tap flow from the faucet and left the hose attached before he walked back towards Near and seated himself again, watching the duck float harmlessly on the water's surface before, since it only seemed appropriate, grabbing several more ducks from the bag beside Near and placing them in the chilly water.

"...I'm fine, honestly." Despite the fact that actions had long since left Near's words behind, Mello still felt the need to make his point in reply. "But I'm not going to entirely pass on sleeping. I may only nap most of the time, but I still do sleep." He looked over at Near... and smiled, a little vague crooked thing but still and effort made. "I'm gonna' have to hang something over the surveillance camera in my room so that I can get some privacy for that, though."

And he firmly believed that that didn't mean a thing, and that he could say that without conversation becoming unacceptably weird again.

"...As to your privacy, I suppose I'll allow it," he said, and gave Mello a similar smile in turn.

"I'm going to see if I can find another controller to adapt. You can put the rest of the ducks in the pool while I'm at it."

Mello nodded easily enough, eyes trained upward on Near -for once- before he reached over for the bag full of ducks and set to the task of putting them into the pool. He'd gotten over being offended at little orders like that, he thought... or maybe it was just that he was pretty relaxed right now and unlikely to go picking a fight as things currently stood.

"Would you have considered not allowing it?" There were a million things he could have suggested about what that meant... none of which were allowed, by his own proclamation, so he held his tongue.

"If I thought you were likely to get up to something," Near replied, with a perfectly innocent smile. It could mean a host of things, Near thought, and he'd let Mello choose which interpretation he wanted to hear. ...Or interpretations, as would probably be the case.

He padded quietly back over to the closet, looking for the remote control of a little car he'd had a while back that ought to still be in there. All he would need to do then would be to tune it to the frequency of the ducks, which shouldn't be too hard...

Mello... understood the multitude of meanings in that sentence, though he didn't particularly want to, and his expression twisted-up in an obvious display of that. Even though it technically breached the rules he'd set-forth... pursuing the matter would only make it worse, so he just let it drop and concentrated totally on the matter of getting the ducks into the pool. How many damn ducks were in this bag?

Though there were still a few ducks left in the bag, Mello stopped loading the kiddy pool in favor of watching Near work with his hand held controller. It was kind of interesting to watch, really, and so long as they were shoulder-to-shoulder on the floor like this (or shoulder to head, as the case may be) he had a good vantage point for watching Near work.

He still wasn't thrilled with the comment Near had made about his 'getting up to things,' and had an array of different prods and comebacks to that one whirling in his head right now, but... he wouldn't go and do that just now, no. That would just open the door for more, and for worse.

Near was too busy working on his controller to pay too much attention to Mello's scrutiny of his process, but he was vaguely aware of being watched and that Mello's brain was definitely ticking over.

As predicted, it didn't take too long to fix up the controller, and he put it back together as well as possible before handing it over to Mello.

"Try that," he suggested. If he'd done it correctly, which he was fairly sure he had, some of the ducks should respond to Mello's remote, and the others to Near's own, which... should be interesting.

Mello reached up and took the controller from Near's hands, holding it carefully and frowning just a little as he scrutinized it. There was an edge where the plastic had melted and felt somewhat strange, warm and warped, against his fingertips when he touched it... but he flipped the dial to turn it on, and when he manipulated the dials, indeed, a handful of the ducks in the pool responded by moving in a strange, synchronized swimming kind of pattern.

The visual made him laugh just a little, but really Near had a good deal of creative ingenuity with these things, didn't he?

"I didn't know you were so good with this sort of thing." Mello nodded towards the mini soldering iron, tilting his head and looking sidelong over at Near. "Do you do a lot of customization work with your toys, the?"

"Most of them," Near sighed, picking up his own controller and ordering some of the ducks around. "What you can buy in the shops are really quite basic sometimes, so you have to do a lot of work on it. I make things, too; puppets and things. Really the only thing I don't have to change is Lego..." he added, starting to pull out some of the ducks so that he and Mello would have just one each in the tub.

Though it had been menial work, Mello still felt a little disappointed seeing the ducks taken out, and a little miffed that Near hadn't just said 'put three or four' in, or something to that effect... but that wasn't enough of a reason to start a tiff, not now, so he let it pass unmarked.

"Puppets? You make puppets, do you?" Mello pushed the dial, the one duck remaining that responded to his controller throttling through the water and bumping into Near's hand- something he hadn't intended, but something that couldn't have hurt Near anyhow. "Of anybody in particular, or are they just... animals, or whatever people make puppets out of?"

Near caught Mello's expression. "...We can put the others back in after we play around with just two, but they had to be in the water so I could check they were working," he said, and immediately rammed his duck back against Mello's. It may not have been Mello's intention, but that's why Near had given him another controller. He watched as they rebounded off one another and bobbed across the water like little bumper cars; it was actually pretty funny to watch.

"I make puppets of people, usually," he told Mello, ramming his duck again. "But sometimes other things, too."

Mello frowned, then raised up his controller and very deliberately tried to get hold of the controls, maneuvering his duck around and ramming it into Near's, his lips peeling back in a triumphant grin as the little things bobbled and sloshed in the kiddy pool water. This game could be fun, actually... he'd been rather incredulous at first, but now it seemed as if they'd be having a good time for a while.

"Puppets of me?" Mello asked, the last word stressed as he rammed his duck against Near's and pushed it through the water, awakening a visceral visual association with pushing your tray along in a cafeteria line and using your tray to push the one in front of you ahead in line.

"There may be one or two of you in my collection," Near said airily, scooting his duck out of the way of Mello's to avoid another attack, trying to circle around behind it for a sneak attack.

He gave Mello a little grin before butting his duck into Mello's again.
